WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND, January 5, 2014Seven Years ago I Broke My Back, Today it is the Inspiration for my First iPhone Game

“Sometimes life is hard. Things go wrong. In life and in love and in business and in friendship and in health and in all the other ways life can go wrong. And when things get tough.. this is what you should do: MAKE GOOD ART” – Neil Gaimen’s commencement address at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia

Seven years ago, things went very wrong for me when I fell nine metres down a hole in Beijing resulting in a broken back. It was an incredibly close call since about seven metres down, there was a plank that I went crashing through. This crashslowed be down and was highly likely a lifesaver.

This year, things went wrong again when I lost my job as part of a restructure. Having time on my hands, I decided I should “make good art” out of the most painful experience of my life and do something which I enjoy, which was gaming. Deciding a free mobile game would be the perfect platform. I modeled the gameplay style of Flappy bird, Temple run and Circle. That being an endless game style which you can quickly play anytime and strive for high scores.

I based the game completely on the Beijing fall right down to myself (though in real life my beard is not that ginger). The game comes out shortly and is currently in review at app store. I hope you enjoy the freefall…
